I think most people have some kind of definition of what it means to be a student. In order for me to be a good student, I would have to be dedicated, work hard, and learn a great deal.
This is an important distinction, because it suggests that the things we are taught to be good at are the things that are most of our lives. In other words, we don’t learn to be good at something without practice. However, even though the idea of being “good at something” is commonly used as an excuse to not want to get better at something, it seems to imply that practice is the only way to learn things.
What I mean is that practice can be fun, and it can be challenging, and it can be a necessary part of learning something. But I think it is important to remember that to be good at something, we do have to work at it, and there is a difference between being good at something and being able to learn something.

When I went to college, I wasn’t good at math, but I was good at writing. I made up a test that I thought I could get good grades on, but I never did.
But if I was good at math, and I could get a good grade on a test I didnt bother to use, then I wouldnt have to go to the trouble of learning it the first time. If I was good at writing, then I wouldnt have to practice on my writing test.
The idea of practice can work in many ways. But we all know that practice can be tough. Some of us like to be challenged and we like to do things we arent comfortable with. If I was the one who got a promotion, and I wasnt comfortable with my new job, then I would try something else. I might want to change my job search, because I hate the way I spent my college career.
We all have our own method of practicing. We might feel the need to write, go back to class, read more, and see the beauty in life as opposed to just studying. Or we might just want to do something we really enjoy so we can avoid doing the same old thing. In the book The Art of Happiness, author and psychologist Daniel Gilbert writes, “The best way to avoid doing what you hate is to stop doing what you love.
One can never be completely sure what a person loves or hates, but this is a very common concept. People who love to cook tend to be more organized eaters, whereas people who love to surf tend to be more organized doers. But the thing is, you can’t ever really know what you love or hate.
Well, what we can do is try to be very aware of it. We can try to ask ourselves the following question: What do I like to do, and do I do it enough? If we get this right, we’ll know we like to do things. This is important because it is in this process that we learn to truly love the things we love, and we can then stop making the same mistakes over and over again.
The thing is, there is no such thing as “enough”. What seems to be important to us is how much we do, and how much we do it.
