I have never been a big fan of general/general-specific, but I have to admit that this one is so good and so close to the heart of what I care about most.
The general Clarkston is the main character who’s basically just like everyone else on Deathloop. The best that we can tell about him is that he’s a little bit of a psychopathic, which is probably his whole reason for being on Deathloop. Clarkston and his crew are trying to kill the Visionaries as they’re on Day 2 of the party island, a day we see Clarkston and his crew in on Deathloop.
Clarkston is pretty much the only character on Deathloop whose actions you actually care about. And because he’s the only one with any agency, you care about him because you feel that there must be something special about him. So when he’s on the island with the Visionaries, he’s the only guy who actually cares that they’re still alive (because it doesn’t matter anyway since they’re stuck on Day 2).
This is pretty much the entire reason you play the game. Deathloop is all about keeping you interested and having a good time. To that extent, the fact that Clarkston is the only character in the game with any agency is a good thing. It means that all the other characters are actually important, but that theyre just a bunch of random characters that have no agency and no connection to the story.
Deathloop is pretty much the entire reason we play games, but it’s not a game that has had many, if any, expansions since its release. Despite being so old, Deathloop hasn’t had any new content added, so there haven’t been any great new features, like extra costumes, weapons, or armor. This is the most significant problem with the game, and the main reason we’re still playing it.
It feels like a lot of the game’s story is just a bunch of random stuff. The game’s creators have admitted that the developers are just throwing random bits of information at us, like a story about the visions that Colt has been trying so hard to get, all for the sake of making everyone feel like they’re important.
The developers have admitted that the reason they are telling us this story is to make it feel important. Most of the other games we’ve seen these visions of have done this as well. But then again, they are also the creators of the game, so maybe they just know how to make a story feel important.
It’s easy to say, “Hey that’s cool, I can’t wait to play it. But you know what, I couldn’t care less,” but not so easy to say, “Hey, I can’t wait to play it because it makes me feel important.
And here’s the kicker. It’s always hard to say something important when you don’t have the actual information.
And I think it all comes down to what you want to say. When you’re saying, “I cant wait to play it,” theres just so much to say. Theres the trailer, the game itself, the concept and the story. And all those things you want to say. But when you dont have the information, then it’s hard to say what it is you are trying to say.
