Most of the time, if you’re reading this and you’re a manager of a dollar general store, you probably are paid a lot more than a manager of a Starbucks or Target or Home Depot. But that’s not the point. This article isn’t to compare the two. It’s just to talk about how much a typical dollar general manager makes.
I know that a lot of managers are making less than a Walmart manager or a Best Buy manager. Thats not really news. But most of us at Dollar General make more than our manager and manager combined. (You can call us dollar general managers. We don’t mind.) As I mentioned, this article isnt to compare the two, but to talk about the different level of pay that managers make.
Dollar General’s managers are paid based on the size of their store and the number of items in stock. Dollar General’s manager are paid on the same schedule as our managers are but they are paid on a different schedule. That means that every time they work they make more than a normal store manager. A typical Dollar General manager makes about $43,000 a year.
So how does this compare to our own pay? Our pay for a store manager at our company is $42,500 a year.
Dollar stores are one of the most underpaid jobs in America, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they make the most money. However, Dollar Generals owners make much more than they should. The problem is that while they sell a lot of stuff, the stuff they sell is very similar to the stuff we buy at our local grocery stores.
In the real world, Dollar Generals are not the cheapest places to work. In fact, stores are more expensive than other companies. This is because of a system of different pricing in different markets. For example, our company may buy the same item from the same store at the same price but a Dollar General could order that item from Amazon for cheaper. This is why Dollar Generals are so underpaid. Dollar General employees may make more because they have more options to choose from.

That is, Dollar General employees make the same as other Walmart employees and other Dollar General employees make the same as other Dollar General employees.
