All of us have a general idea of what our body needs, but what about the brain? How much does our brain know, how much is it able to take in? Is it aware of our surroundings, of our body, of our thoughts? I have been a registered nurse for more than 30 years now, and I am always amazed at the number of “I don’t know” answers I hear about.
As most of us know, all of our bodies are on a 24/7/365 cycle. That’s not only the case for our muscles but also our brain. The brain is constantly making decisions, analyzing stimuli, evaluating and choosing the right inputs, and making the final decisions. But we all know that there are some things that it is not aware of.
These include our mind and the emotions that we are experiencing at all times. These two are in constant dialogue. Our brain is an organic machine that reacts to the stimuli we give it. This includes the external stimuli that we are experiencing, the emotions we are feeling, our mood, and our thoughts. But it is not just one thing.
The question of how to make those decisions is one that every brain researcher has pondered.
Scientists are now working on creating artificial neural networks, or ANNs, to analyze the patterns that the human brain makes when it is experiencing and feeling emotions. They are looking to build a model of the brain that can actually predict the next emotion that the brain is going to feel.
As we are seeing in the movie, this is the result of the research being done by the team at the Max Planck Institute in Germany. The researchers hope that the artificial neural networks can be used in a wide range of applications, from diagnosis to treatment of human diseases to the development of new security systems.
That sounds like a pretty ambitious endeavor, and it is, but so far the AI that is being created is no closer to the goal of having a human being create a model of the brain. It’s very good at predicting the most likely emotions, but it has no way of being able to make a prediction of the next one, or even predict the emotion that might come next. As a result, it is extremely limited in its ability to predict which emotions will come next.
While we would expect an AI that was capable of being able to make predictions to be able to anticipate its next emotion, we have to wonder just how much of its predictions are actual, and how much are just guesses. Is the AI just guessing in terms of the emotions that it has already predicted? Perhaps it is, but so far it doesn’t have a way to know what emotions might come next.
This can be a real problem. But the reality is that our senses are capable of more than just guessing. We can sense the emotions of the moment, the emotions of the people we know, the emotions of the characters we know, and the emotions of the people we know. If we have already guessed the emotions, then we can guess the emotions of the next time.
The problem is that we can only guess the emotions of the people we know, so we don’t have a way to know what emotions they might have. We can’t predict the feelings of anyone else, because all of that is guesswork.
